Least Successful Olympic Swimmer

Carolyn Schuler of the USA won the 100 meters butterfly at the 1960 Rome Olympics in the new world-record time. She was, however, completely overshadowed by her team-mate, Miss Carolyn Wood, who dived into the pool swam one length, turned, disappeared beneath the water and gave every appearance of having become the first swimmer to drown during Olympic Games.
Miss Wood eventually rose spluttering to the surface and grasped the lane rope, whereupon her coach dived in fully clothed to administer resuscitation. Afterwards she told the eager reporters: ‘I got a big mouthful of water and could not go on’
